A delegation from the Philippines stopped by Operation UNITE’s office on August 23, 2019, to learn about collaborative prevention programs and initiatives, local coalition building, and the treatment efforts.
The visit was part of a week-long professional exchange program under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. They were accompanied by a representative with the World Affairs Council in Louisville.
The WAC is working with the State Department on a “Sustaining Drug Demand Reduction” projecting bring the delegates to the United States.

The objective of the meeting included a discussion about youth prevention efforts and community coalition building in rural Appalachia. They were also asked to learn about UNITE’s management of the KY Help Statewide Call Center, in particular, providing resources to state residents seeking help for a substance use disorder or for support for family members.
UNITE staff introduced the UNITE mission and goals, strategic partnerships that lead to success, and various initiatives aimed at youth. The group was especially interested in the “On The Move!” prevention unit.
Knox County UNITE Coalition Chair Claudia Greenwood and coalition member Marcia Dixon described their organization, youth initiatives, fundraising efforts, and organizational structure.
Courtney Maynard, screening referral specialist with the Call Center, explained the KY HELP Statewide Call Center staffing and daily operations.
