Medication Drop Boxes & Take-Back Days
To make it easier for citizens to dispose of their expired or unwanted medications – both prescription and over-the-counter – medication drop boxes are available throughout the UNITE service region in conjunction with police agencies and local governments.
Since October 1, 2012, UNITE has collected 34,572.7 pounds (more than 17.28 tons) of medications from these drop boxes (updated 10-30-19).
Permanent Drop Box Locations
There are 48 medication drop boxes in or adjacent to Operation UNITE’s service area. These boxes are available during regular business hours.

Please remove all identifying labels from prescription pill bottles before depositing them in these boxes. Liquid medications, illicit drugs, and items with a needle are not accepted at these locations.

National DEA Take-Back Days
‘One crisis we have the power to control together’
The next National Take-Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2020.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has conducted 18 National Prescription Drug Take-Back Days in partnership with Operation UNITE, the Kentucky State Police, and other agencies through October 2019.
During the last DEA Take-Back Day, held Saturday, October 26, 2019, UNITE turned in 3,129 pounds (1.56 tons) of medications. Kentucky’s Take-Back Day total was 13,100.84 pounds (6.55 tons). Since 2010, the DEA and its state, local, and tribal law-enforcement and community partners have removed 12,699,456 pounds (6,349.7 tons) of prescription medications from circulation (through October 2019).
The National Take-Back Day scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2020, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
